Board games like Backgammon have been played for thousands of years all over the world. Most of the leaders and emperors played these board games as a symbol of elegance and aristocracy. Primitive history reveals that the ancient ancestry of Egypt, Rome, Sumaria and Persia started the game thousands of years back in different shapes and forms. It got improvised in England in the seventeenth century and the 1920s witnessed the revolutionary change in the game in the form of the ‘Doubling Cube’. It regained its popularities in the 1970’s and finally again in the ‘90’s due to the Internet era. For more than a decade online Backgammon has been at its peak of popularity.

There are different opinions regarding its classification. Some people believe it derived from ‘Baec’, meaning back and ‘Gamen’, which means game. Others believe that it may have been derived from ‘Back’ meaning little and ‘Gammon’ meaning battle.

However, today what we see as Backgammon is a refined version and combination of some famous ancient games like Roman Tabula, Egyptian Senet and Asian Nard Playing Backgammon: The game is played with two players.

Each player has fifteen pieces and twenty-four triangles. The target is to move all the pieces called ‘Checkers’ past your opponents’ pieces.

Triangles indicate the points. As this game has crossed several geographic areas its name has also changed. The French call it Tric-Trac, the Scottish refer to it as Gammon, while the British have named it Backgammon.

Italians call the same game Tavole Reale, Arabians call it as Shesh Besh while the Spanish call it Tablas Reales. Whatever name is used, Backgammon requires both luck and skill.
