Backgammon Tips

Follow Stanley’s Top Tips….

Backgammon is a game that changes with every move, whether that is in the strategy or because of the variety of moves possible at any point.

From the stance of the novice, where beginners move then think, (only natural that) what they need to practice is the actually planning of a game and that only comes with experience.

Even the seasoned professional requires a certain amount of scientific thinking behind each game and the ability to analyse the next 10 moves of not only theirs but that of their opponents too.

So nothing is predictable, which is why these tips are there to teach you, not only on how to play but to also give you some of the game’s strategies to help you win.

Essential to any game is to stay focused no matter what the distraction, keep to your game always trying to think ahead if you need to draw a picture in your mind of the your next move.

Then take your time, concentrate imagine that move taking place before you and then you’re sure do it! But pay attention to what is taking place and watch the move of the opposition very carefully.

If you can anticipate the opposition’s next move and counter balance it with a move of your own that doesn’t offer any advantage to them.

Curb your aggressiveness; safety is always the better option here.

There is a time for aggression but that is not now.

Your objective is to win not to kick your player’s pieces across the pitch metaphorically speaking Should your opponent get ahead of you at the start of the game stick with him to stop him from getting too far in front of you? Put your checkers into locations on the game board that you block your opponent’s moves, doing this the advantage is with you and the chances of you winning are greatly improved, as you get closer to winning the game.

Keep an even number of pieces on the slots, this way you avoid being hit by your opponent and losing important points. If you need to decide between hitting and getting a point always hit but only if after that, you yourself can’t be hit in return.

They lose one piece and you have the advantage. Crucially now it is finale time. The bar point is known for giving you seven points. It is a risky position hence its value.

Given the option, take a four or five point in the more secure areas, where you don’t easily lose your checkers pieces as you could in the seven position.

Now, the most unpredictable element of them all, the dice. The dice denote you how many checkers you can move and what can and can’t be done.

Remember also keep an eye on the dice to ensure that you both move according to what is shown. Follow these useful tips and hopefully your game and enjoyment will improve.
